Wono is enjoying her new surroundings at Dolphin Cove, with new salt-water pools, open and covered decks, and a free-flowing natural seawater lagoon. She is also getting to know her 2 new friends, Grommet and J.J.
Grommet and J.J. were recently adopted two male California sea lion pups, currently estimated to be about one year of age. Orphaned with over 1,000 other sea lion pups in southern California, government officials and rescue experts attempted to rehabilitate and release these pups shortly after their stranding in January, 2013. After being released into the wild, the pups lost about half of their body weight, began begging people for food and, eventually, re-stranded. Thus, government officials decided that the pups would not survive in the wild, and must be permanently placed in managed care facilities. Immediately, Dolphin Cove offered to provide a permanent, loving home for some of these animals in need.
We’d like to thank Dolphins Plus staff, Dolphin Cove, and the Marine Mammal Conservancy for their help in constructing this new environment.
