Partnerships with Our Valued Community
Protect Wild Dolphin Alliance (PWDA)
Dolphins Plus proudly supports the Protect Wild Dolphins Alliance (PWDA) in their mission to safeguard marine wildlife. PWDA works to secure funding and develop additional resources for the rescue and rehabilitation of sick or injured marine mammals. The organization also supports conservation initiatives and public awareness programs that highlight the threats facing marine wildlife and the steps we can take to protect our shared ocean heritage.
The goal of the Protect Wild Dolphins Alliance is to allocate funds from state specialty license plates to authorized organizations actively engaged in marine wildlife rescue, education, and conservation efforts.
Proceeds from the Protect Marine Wildlife Specialty License Plate will directly support critical conservation, research, and educational programs focused on protecting Florida’s threatened and protected species, including dolphins, whales, manatees, seabirds, and sea turtles.
Florida Keys Wild Bird Center
Dolphins Plus is proud to support the Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center in their mission to protect and care for wild birds.
The Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing native and migratory wild birds that have been injured or displaced. For birds that cannot be released, the center ensures they receive humane, long-term care. Additionally, they focus on educating the public about the importance of coexisting with all wild bird species.
Dolphins Plus actively contributes to this vital cause by donating an average of 9,000 pounds of fish annually, with an estimated value of $10,000 per year, to help sustain and nourish the birds under the center’s care.
Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC)
Since opening our doors in 1980, the Dolphins Plus team has been at the forefront of marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation. As active members of various rescue organizations, we have dedicated countless hours, expertise, and financial support to cetacean rescue efforts. Additionally, we proudly assist the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) in rescuing distressed manatees.
How Manatee Rescues Work
The FWC responds to public reports of distressed manatees by assessing the situation and determining the necessary intervention. If a manatee requires assistance, trained biologists step in to either:
- Provide immediate aid and release the animal on-site
- Safely transport the manatee to a critical care facility for rehabilitation
A Collaborative Effort
The ultimate goal is to rescue, rehabilitate, and release sick or injured manatees through a network of dedicated agencies and organizations.
This is made possible by the Manatee Rescue & Rehabilitation Partnership (MRP), a cooperative effort involving rescue teams, rehabilitation facilities, and monitoring programs.
Want to learn more? Explore the MRP and its partner facilities.
Report a distressed manatee by calling the Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (888-404-3922).
